The Prep School

The Prep School comprises the Early Years (Nursery & Reception classes), Upper Infants (Years 1 & 2), Lower Juniors (Years 3 & 4) and Upper Juniors (Years 5 & 6).  There are never more than 16 pupils in a class.

We follow the National Curriculum and give the core subjects priority.  The curriculum is designed to stimulate and support the development of each individual child.   Reception childrenThe small class sizes allow for plenty of one-to-one contact.  The academic subjects are enriched with Dance, Drama and Singing – see Performing Arts.

In Key Stages 1 and 2 there is a two year rolling programme so a lack of understanding in any area, can be readdressed and corrected.

The children are encouraged to become independent learners and, through a variety of teaching strategies, to achieve not just their potential but to acquire an increased love of learning and knowledge of the wider world.  The children learn to accept increased responsibility and to co-operate with each other as their confidence grows.

Assessment & Reporting in the Prep School

Pupils’ work is marked and assessed on a regular basis with weekly tests in spelling, times tables etc., as well as end of term tests in core subjects.  Key stage 1 and 2 SATs are taken at the end of Years 2 and 6 with Optional Tests in Maths and English in Years 3, 4 and 5.

There is a Parents’ Evening each term and a full written report, which includes both academic and vocational subjects, at the end of the Summer Term.  Staff are always available however to discuss any concerns after school.

Sport and Physical Activity in the Prep School

During the Autumn Term pupils in Years 1 to 6 are taken to the Centre AT7 for weekly swimming lessons Sportwith Local Authority coaches. In the Spring and Summer Terms they attend the Alan Higgs Centre, to take part in a variety of sporting activities including ball skills, to improve hand –eye coordination, team games such as touch rugby, volley ball and hockey, as well as Short Tennis.

As well as dance lessons during the lunch break, after school and on Saturdays, pupils are encouraged to join the Junior Choir.  Piano, singing and guitar lessons are also available from age 7.
