Black Country Living Museum

Last Friday, Year 7 went to the Black Country Living Museum. Whilst there, they learnt how coal (hence Black Country) became the dominant factor in forging a strong iron industry (sorry about the pun!), along with glass and other metals. On a tour around the vast museum site, the pupils discovered how harsh life was for everyone in the 19th century, including children having to go down the mines for the main part of the century, although life above ground sorting out the coal in the open air regardless of the weather for 12 hours every day was no easy matter either.

Inside the museum, they had the opportunity to smelt a spanner out of molten pewter and how to change a tyre at high speed on a racing car. The pupils were immaculately behaved and attentive towards the guides, with insightful questions, and were a joy to take.
